Your backyard is a space where you enjoy quality time with your family all year long. But accidents can happen anywhere — even in the oasis of your backyard. For parents, taking extra safety precautions out back should be just as important as childproofing done indoors.

To prep and maintain your yard for outdoor safe play and relaxation, here are several important steps:

Lawn

Remove tree stumps and level concrete footings to avoid tripping. Lawn debris such as rocks could become projectiles when cutting the grass. So be sure to clear the yard. Additionally, children should never be nearby while you’re using motorized equipment. Store potentially dangerous tools, equipment and chemicals completely out of the reach of children, such as in a locked shed or garage.

Fencing

A yard without a fence is like a house without walls. Fences help protect children from danger, keeping toddlers out of swimming pools, hot tubs, ponds or away from traffic or strangers. Fences can also improve pet safety, keeping your pets in your yard and other animals out and can reduce your liability by preventing injuries to uninvited guests on your property.

With that in mind, be sure your fences and gates are functional and free of rust that can render them useless or dangerous.

“Rusty metal gate hardware that no longer functions properly or becomes a threat to children is a top homeowner concern, according to our research,” says Jim Paterson, senior vice president of D&D Technologies, which manufactures gate latches and hinges made of ultra-strong engineering polymers.

Eliminate this worry by installing high-quality fencing impervious to seasonal weather, ground settling and other factors that can cause gates to become misaligned over time. Opt for gate hardware that can be easily adjusted to function properly over the long-term.

Additionally, be sure to install pool barrier access gates with adjustable self-closing hinges and self-latching gates where the latches are out of the reach of children.

Homeowners can peruse a bevy of rust-free gate hardware and child safety latches online at www.ddtechglobal.com or in person under the Stanley Hardware brand available through most Lowe’s stores.

Sun Protection

When the sun is bearing down, skin can be susceptible to burns and permanent damage year-round. And children’s skin can be even more sensitive to harmful UV rays. Your yard should have plenty of shady areas to seek respite. Plant trees and watch them grow. Install a canopy. Adorn patio furniture with an umbrella.

Making the perfect outdoor living space in your backyard

Making the perfect outdoor living space in your backyard

Posted in: Articles,Press Coverage As the weather begins to warm and the daylight hours get longer, your yard can quickly become the most important “room” of your home. However, you aren’t alone if your backyard looks outdated and lackluster. Weather conditions can be tough on outdoor areas, but with a few simple updates, you can create the perfect outdoor living space.

Gates and gate hardware
Perhaps the first thing you and your guests see (and use) when entering your yard is the gate, so why not make a great first impression by updating rusty and squeaky gate hardware. D&D Technologies recently launched the LokkLatch Magnetic, a gate latch that operates and locks from both sides of the gate, and it’s re-keyable so you don’t have to carry multiple keys for your house. Featuring D&D’s patented magnetic latching system, and horizontal & vertical adjustment to ensure a consistent gate closure upon ground movement, LokkLatch Magnetic is the first gate lock to offer coordinating handle trim covers that match your lighting and yard accessories, and they won’t rust. Available in black, brushed and polished metal, LokkLatch Magnetic helps to create a cohesive look that enhances your outdoor living environment. Complete the look with matching TruClose self-closing gate hinges, also offering coordinating trim covers. D&D Technologies’ products feature a limited lifetime warranty and are available under the Stanley brand through select Lowe’s stores, and other hardware retailers under the National Hardware brand. Visit www.ddtechglobal.com for a full range of gate hardware products and to find a retailer near you.

Lighting
Weather permitting, your yard can be the perfect place to relax for an evening. Avoid sitting in total darkness. The many options of patio lighting including path sconces, post lamps and even string lights –all are an answer to keeping your outdoor space lit and inviting.

Furniture
The key to decorating any room in your home is attractive, comfortable furniture that beckons to be sat upon, and this is no different for your outdoor furniture. While prices on outdoor furniture can be a little overwhelming, used furniture with a little love and creativity can be good as new, without the high cost. Cozy chairs, chaise lounges and benches can gain new use with a coat of outdoor spray paint, then recover cushions and add colorful pillows to finish it off.

Plants, flowers and shrubs
Even if they’re only alive for a few months out of the year, flowers can bring any yard to life. A few strategically placed shrubs, flower beds and herb gardens can help turn your outdoor area into a lively space perfect for relaxing personal moments or parties with friends and family.

Statues and accessories
Give your backyard even more personality by selecting a few garden statues or other accessories that reflect your style – such as recycled metal sculptures, elaborately painted bird houses, unique planters or large colorful rocks.

With a few simple updates, you can easily create an outdoor retreat in your own backyard that can provide you the space for entertaining, reading and relaxing without a costly renovation. So go get started.

Pool Safety for HOA & Multiunits:  Are your residents at risk?

Pool Safety for HOA & Multiunits:  Are your residents at risk?

Posted in: Articles,Press Coverage Pools are a great way to socialize with neighbors and friends. The safety of children in these locations requires a community effort. Those who maintain the pool must ensure that basic safety standards like clear water, appropriate lifesaving devices, fencing, gates and locks are appropriately maintained. With “layers of protection” in place, homeowner associations can ensure a safer oasis of family fun and relaxation and reduce potential liability.

Over 3,000 people in the United States drown unintentionally every year. More than 1 in 4 fatal drowning victims are children 14 and younger, and for every child that dies, another 3 receive emergency-department care for submersion injuries. Of those receiving emergency care, 40% require hospitalization. In fact, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death among small children (1 to 4 years of age) and the second leading cause of death (after motor vehicle accidents) among children 1 to 14 years old.

Year-round backyard safety tips for families

Posted in: Articles,Reviews (ARA) – Your backyard is a space where you enjoy quality time with your family – from running around with your kids in the fall leaves to playing catch with your furry friend in the snow. It’s a place to escape, but remember accidents can happen anywhere at any time, and just like you childproof your house, you need to ensure your backyard is safe as well.

Keeping your backyard safe begins with your fence. A yard without a fence is a little like a house without walls. Fences help protect children from danger, keeping toddlers out of swimming pools, hot tubs and ponds or keeping them in the yard, away from busy traffic or strangers. Fences can also help keep your own pets in your yard, and other animals out. They can reduce your liability by preventing injuries to uninvited guests on your property, or damage or injury caused by escaped pets.

“A good weekend winterizing project is making sure your fences and gates are functioning properly and are protected from rust, a destructive force that can render gate hardware useless or dangerous,” says Jim Paterson, senior vice president of D&D Technologies, which manufactures gate latches and hinges made of ultra-strong engineering polymers. “In our research, we found that when homeowners consider their fencing needs, rusty metal gate hardware that no longer functions properly or becomes a threat to children was their top concern. Rust-free and adjustable gate hardware is available.

Seasonal weather, ground settling and other factors can cause a gate to become misaligned over time and not function properly. It’s important to have gate hardware that can be easily adjusted to overcome this. TruClose self-closing, tension adjustable hinges are an ideal solution. Some models are vertically and horizontally adjustable as well. Combined with D&D adjustable, locking gate latches will ensure your gate will always function properly.

Additional precautions to take when childproofing your backyard:

  • Tighten and cover any protruding bolts on swing sets and do not attach ropes or cords, which could become strangulation hazards.
  • Remove old tree stumps and rocks, level concrete footings to avoid tripping.
  • Seal wooded items such as decks, swing sets and picnic tables before inclement weather sets in.
  • Completely fence pool and spa areas with adjustable self-closing hinges like TruClose and self-latching gates, ensuring latches are out of the reach of children such as the Magnalatch Safety Gate Latch. Both products carry a lifetime warranty and are adjustable both vertically and horizontally for quick and easy adjustments.
  • Eliminate access to lawn equipment and chemicals. Put these items completely out of the reach of children.
  • Keep a first aid kit and a rescue kit for those backyards with water features easily accessible.

Your backyard can be one of the most exciting places for your children through the entire year. A little prevention along the way will keep it safe and provide wonderful memories for your family.
